How much should a Zimbabwean business spend on digital marketing?

The most common question we get, before anyone asks about strategy, is 'how much will this cost?'. Zimbabwean business owners are right to ask it first. Budgets are tight, the currency situation punishes mistakes, and there are enough agencies in Harare who charge for a logo and disappear.

So here are honest numbers, in USD, for what things cost locally and what results you should expect. No ranges so wide they are meaningless.

The website

A credible small-business website in Zimbabwe costs somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand USD depending on how much is custom. Below that you are buying a template someone filled in over a weekend, and it will not rank or convert.

What you should insist on: fast loading on mobile data, a WhatsApp button on every page, prices or price ranges published, and the ability to edit your own content. What you should not pay extra for: animations nobody sees, and a blog nobody writes.

Paid advertising on Facebook, Instagram and Google

Meta ads in Zimbabwe are still cheap by global standards. A serious test budget starts around 150 to 300 USD a month, plus management. Below 100 a month you cannot gather enough data to learn anything.

Google Search ads cost more per click but reach people with immediate intent. If you sell something urgent, like plumbing, towing, borehole repair or medical services, put the money there. If you sell something visual or impulse-driven, Meta usually wins.

Expect the first 60 days to be tuition, not profit. Any agency promising results in week one is guessing.

Social media management

Ongoing content and community management in Zimbabwe generally runs from around 200 to 800 USD a month depending on volume and whether photography and video are included. The single biggest driver of results is not the number of posts, it is how fast comments and inbox messages get answered.

If you can only afford one thing, buy fast responses rather than more posts.

Automation and AI

This is where budgets have shifted most in the last two years. A WhatsApp assistant, an automated quote flow, or a lead-follow-up system typically costs from about 1,500 USD to build and a modest monthly fee to run.

The reason it competes well with ad spend is simple: ads increase the number of enquiries, automation increases the percentage of enquiries that turn into money. Most Zimbabwean businesses are leaking more at the second step than the first, which means automation is usually the better first purchase.

A sensible first-year split

For a small business with a monthly marketing budget of around 500 to 1,000 USD, we would typically advise: fix conversion first with automation and the website, then put roughly half the remaining monthly spend into paid ads, a quarter into content and social, and hold a quarter back to double down on whatever works.

Review it every quarter against one number: cost per closed customer. Everything else is vanity. If you want us to sanity check your plan, send us your current numbers and we will tell you honestly where the leak is.
